Volvo_C30_R-Design
Scheduled to debut next to the refreshed 2010 Volvo C70 at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the new Volvo C30 R Design is a unique combination of upcoming trends and everything. Ford has done little to conceal their displeasure with Volvo’s market performance, yet they fail to take any substantial action to reverse the downward trend. Unlike the R badging of the 90’s and early 00’s, the new R-Design is nothing more than a sporty package designed to capture the attention of the flighty, easily-distracted younger demographic.
Once upon a time, if a Volvo 850R or S60R pulled up next to you at the light, you were about 4 seconds away from being dusted by the most serious sleeper in the industry. Both the 850R (1995-1997) and its successor, the S60R (2003-2007), were equipped with a low-pressure turbo I-5 capable of cranking out 240 hp/221 lb-ft and 300 hp/300 lb-ft (respectively) and had more street cred than Heavy D. The R Design, which is available as an upgrade package for the current-gen C30, S40, and S60, is nothing like the R of legends told. The only nod to performance is made through a body kit and some polished sport exhaust pipes, the engines are the same as those found on the base models. The new R Design blatantly favors style over substance which, surprisingly enough, Volvo has no compunction admitting. From the official press release: “The R-Design appeals to the discerning younger customer segment that is looking for a personalised car with an exclusive, sporty nature. At the same time, R-Design has become a way for Volvo Cars to boost the company’s attractiveness as a brand and to enhance a more emotive connection to its products. And customer surveys show that this strategy is paying off.” To put it simply, they are employing a variation of the same market philosophy currently used by Scion: “Give them enough shiny objects and they probably won’t notice they could tear more ass in a Honda Odyssey.”

After weeks of depressing news regarding what was rapidly shaping up to be the inevitable sale (and subsequent death sentence) of Volvo to Chinese group Geely Automobile Holding, a faint ray of hope has emerged. According to reports, the U.S. based Crown consortium has secured funding from private investors and declared their intent to relieve the ailing Swedish subsidiary from Ford’s hands. Ironically enough, the Crown consortium is spearheaded by former Ford executives, Michael Dingman and Shamel Rushwin (also of Chrysler), though neither the group nor the purchase seem to have any apparent affiliation with the Blue Oval.
Aside from their expressed interest, the details of Crown’s bid are relatively scarce but sources have indicated the group is also procuring financial backing from Swedish investors, presumably with the promise that if the acquisition is successful, production will remain rooted firmly in Volvo’s motherland. The specific dollar amount the Crown consortium is offering has not been announced, but the same discreet messengers charged with leaking the initial information say that although the amount is notably less than Geely’s $2.5 billion, both Geely and Crown have outlined ownership plans that pledge an additional $3 billion investment into Volvo.
As of today, both Ford and Volvo have opted to remain tight-lipped on the matter but we expect more information to break as Ford’s year-end deadline to complete the sale approaches.
Editorial Note: In one of the articles used to compile this article, analyst Gregor Claussen of Commerzbank in Frankfurt told Forbes, “Having a U.S.-led consortium as a buyer might be charming to Americans, but Volvo being a small company needs economies of scale that Geely can provide.” While certainly a valid point from a financially shrewd perspective, what Claussen has obviously neglected to consider in his patronization of the Crown consortium’s bid is the rich lecherous history of the Chinese automotive industry and Ford’s interest in preserving their image. Unlike their Detroit brethren, the Ford Motor Company is controlled by the same family responsible for its foundation in 1903 and each major decision is carefully weighed against its potential to harm their meticulously maintained personal reputation. GM may have had no compunction whoring out Saab to the highest bidder (as evidence by Beijing’s recent purchase of the design and production rights to the Saab 9-5) or leaving their under-performing brands (and dealerships) to die an ugly, public death, but Ford has yet to stoop to such deplorable levels. If their ethos is to be believed, Ford is aware that the sale of Volvo to Geely would be a gross breach of both personal and professional ethics and would place their values no higher than those of the The General. So Claussan’s observation may be factually accurate, but Ford should know it isn’t right.

We only really care about, like, two cars here at the Chicago Auto Show. One of them, the 2011 Shelby GT500, with its aluminum V8, represents precisely what we want automakers to build. Lighter! Faster! More sexy!

Call me completely tasteless, but this ‘Stang would camouflage nicely with a group of flushed Zebras… However, if this tickles your style senses know that the Red Stripe Appearance Package will be solely available in White or Black colored 2007 Shelby GT500 Coupe’s. Stripes aside, the special-edition package includes red and black leather interior and red-accent exterior badges. To top it all Ford throws in a pair of floor mats with a Red and Silver embroidered "Cobra Snake" logo and a fitted Shelby GT500-branded car cover. The Limited edition package will be available from early May through late June and it will carry a price tag of $1,650. - Click “Read More…” below for the press-release and the image-gallery

- Production of limited-edition Red Stripe Appearance Package for 2007 Shelby GT500 to begin in May.
- Special package includes unique exterior striping and badges, Red and Black leather seating, special interior trim and logos and branded Shelby GT500 car cover.
- 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 tops in segment quality, says RDA Group research—92 percent of owners would definitely recommend the vehicle to family or friends.
DEARBORN, Mich., April 19, 2007 – Even with demand for the most muscular Mustang ever – the Ford Shelby GT500 – at a record high, Ford is cranking up additional interest with a new, limited-edition package that adds unique visual appeal to the Shelby GT500. Enter the "Red Stripe Appearance Package," to be available beginning in May.
The Ford Shelby GT500 is the most powerful Mustang on the road today and arguably one of the most successful projects from Ford’s Special Vehicle Team (SVT) in terms of performance, excitement and, importantly, quality.
In fact, early indicators show the Shelby GT500 is a quality standout. In the most recent Global Quality Research System (GQRS) study from RDA Group, an independent research company based in Bloomfield Hills, Mi., the Shelby GT500 earned praise as the highest-quality Mustang model, with the fewest “things gone wrong” in the first three months of ownership.
The Mustang line scores above the segment average in quality, according to the GQRS study, and the Shelby GT500 specifically scored the top result in the “sports car” segment.
“The unmatched quality and power of the latest Mustang masterpiece explains why 9 out of 10 owners are completely satisfied with their overall ownership experience,” the April 2007 RDA Group report concluded.
New Limited-Edition Shelby GT500 Package to be Available Beginning in May
The new Red Stripe Appearance Package will be available on any new 2007 Shelby GT500 Coupe with either White or Black exterior paint. Included in the special-edition package are Bright Red overbody and bodyside stripes, a Red and Black leather interior, unique red-accent exterior badges, including red-tinted Cobra emblems in the grille, fenders, and in the faux gas cap on the rear panel. Even the "SHELBY" letters on the decklid feature red accents.
The Red Stripe Appearance Package also adds unique new premium floor mats with a Red and Silver embroidered "Cobra Snake" logo, plus a fitted Shelby GT500-branded car cover.
The appearance package carries an MSRP of $1,650 and will be available from early May through late June, marking the end of the 2007 model run.
"The red package is all about exclusivity," said Robert Parker, Ford’s Car Marketing manager. "Our Mustang customers are eager to buy unique vehicles like the Shelby GT500 and will certainly appreciate the opportunity for something even more exclusive, made in an even more limited number. These are great customers and very passionate. I’m glad we can continue to deliver what they want.”
Shelby GT500 is among the Most Successful Performance Mustangs Ever
Enthusiasm doesn't begin to describe the ongoing demand for the Ford Shelby GT500. In the hyper-competitive auto market where supply routinely surpasses demand, the Shelby GT500 still has a long waiting list of buyers.
The Shelby GT500 was created by racing legend Carroll Shelby and Ford SVT and is a modern interpretation of the classic Shelby Mustang of the 1960s. Beneath the hood of every GT500 – including the new Red model – is a 5.4-liter supercharged V-8 engine officially rated at 500 hp. A 6-speed manual gearbox features evenly spaced gears that help provide a sharp, lively driving experience on both road and track.
In addition to the engine upgrades, Ford’s SVT engineers retuned and upgraded key Mustang chassis components. Improvements include revised shocks, spring rates and upgraded stabilizer bars that help the Ford Shelby GT500 maneuver with authority.
The GT500's unique design features include wide upper and lower fascia openings with a functional air splitter. On either side, slanting headlamp openings add to the dramatic front appearance. The carefully tailored hood has heat extractors protruding near the leading edge, combining to provide improved airflow and aerodynamics. The MSRP of a 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 starts at $41,675.

Ford Australia will resurrect its Cobra name tag at this year’s Sydney International Show (Oct.11) with the presentation of the special edition Falcon GT Cobra and the Falcon Cobra Ute models. Ford says that the limited-edition GT Cobra Sedan and Ute are a celebration of the XC Falcon coupe finishing 1st and 2nd at the 1977 Bathurst 1000 in the hands of Colin Bond and Allan Moffat. -Continued after the jump Apart from the blue stripes running the length of the cars and the Cobra snake badgetry in and out, the Cobra GT and Ute also feature an updated version of FPV’s (Ford Performance Vehicles) Boss 5.4-litre V8 engine. Output has been enhanced to 302 KW (405Hp) mirroring the capacity of Ford’s small-block V8 engine (302 cubic-inches) and is also exactly double the 151 kW (202Hp) output of the 1978 Cobra’s 4.9-litre V8 engine. Sales are expected to start in the first quarter of 2008 with production being limited to 400 Cobra Sedans and 100 Utes.

Ford Performance Vehicles unveils the Cobra
Sunday, October 7, 2007
The iconic Cobra name has returned to Australian motoring, with Ford Performance Vehicles (FPV) today unveiling its new special edition GT Cobra and Cobra Ute.
FPV’s new Cobra range was revealed during a parade lap of Mount Panorama prior to the start of the 2007 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.
Thirty years ago the Ford Falcon XC Hardtop staged the now famous 1-2 victory formation at the 1977 Bathurst 1000 race, which led to the release of the limited edition Cobra XC Hardtop the following year.
“The Cobra name invokes passion among motoring enthusiasts, and now 30 years after the famous 1-2 win at Bathurst, the new FPV GT Cobra offers the exclusivity of Cobra ownership to a new generation of car owners,” said FPV General Manager Rod Barrett.
“The new FPV GT Cobra combines the original XC Cobra’s bold styling with the latest in FPV engineering and total performance.”
“While the vehicle’s exterior features the same blue racing stripes and coiled snake emblem that Cobra is famous for, the vehicle will be powered by FPV’s latest high performance Boss 5.4-litre quad-cam 32 valve V8 engine, which now produces 302kW.”
The new Boss 302 engine powering both the sedan and Ute variants produces 302 kW of power and 540 Nm of torque, and is equipped with FPV stainless steel fabricated exhaust manifolds and a high-flow dual exhaust system.
For motoring buffs, 302 was the capacity in cubic inches of Ford’s small-block V8 engine and is also exactly double the 151 kW output of the 1978 Cobra’s 4.9-litre V8 engine.
The GT Cobra has a limited slip differential and is available with either a close ratio six-speed manual transmission with a high torque clutch or the ZF six-speed automatic transmission with Sequential Sports Shift.
FPV’s innovative R Spec handling package is fitted as standard to the GT Cobra, contributing to the outstanding chassis dynamics of the special edition model.
The white exterior features blue striping across the bonnet, roof and rear deck lid, and is completed by the unique Cobra badge on each front fender and the rear deck lid. The GT Cobra will also include exclusive R Spec badging.
Both variants are fitted with leather seats as standard, with each seat carrying the coiled Cobra snake logo.
The Cobra’s Dunlop SP Sport Maxx 245/35ZR tyres are fitted to special 19-inch five-spoke alloy wheels with white accents and a machined face finish.
Production will be limited to 400 sedans and 100 Utes, and each vehicle will come with a unique Cobra build badge identity.
The GT Cobra sedan will have a recommended retail price of $65,110*, while the Cobra Ute will be priced at $61,200*.
Boss 302
FPV Programs Manager Paul Cook said the objective of the revised Boss engine specification was to increase the peak power and torque in the mid to upper engine speed range, without affecting vehicle exhaust emissions and urban fuel economy.
“Several changes have resulted in the increased performance, including improvements to the volumetric efficiency of the engine above 3750 rpm,” said Cook.
“This has been achieved by a new inlet and exhaust camshaft profile to increase inlet valve lift and duration, with changes to the valve and valve spring to accommodate the increased valve lift.
The compression ratio has been increased from 10.5:1 to 10.8:1, which has improved combustion efficiency through the scavenging of combustion gas.
The engine calibration has been extensively revised to optimise the engine operating conditions with the new components, while improvements have also been made to improve accelerator response.
The FPV GT Cobra has been optimised to run on 98 RON premium unleaded petrol.
* Pricing excludes dealer delivery and statutory charges

If any of you happen to attend the Mid-America Ford Performance and Shelby Meet in Tulsa this weekend, take a good look at these photos because this is what Ford has in store for you: the 2008 Shelby GT500 Super-Snake. While we were kind of chilled out when we learned that the Super-Snake package which will boost your GT500’s output to either 600 or 725Hp will also inflate your bank account by $28.000 / €20.700 (excluding the cost of buying a GT500) we have to admit that it looks scorching hot. For that small percentage of buyers that aren't satisfied with the 2010 Ford Mustang-based Shelby GT500 that packs a 5.4-liter supercharged V8 with 540 ponies under the hood, Caroll Shelby and his team have prepped an even more hardcore package called Super Snake. Due to go on sale in August, Shelby offers the Super Snake package on the GT500 in two guises, with outputs of 630 and 725 horsepower, the latter offered only on the coupe model.
2010 Shelby GT500 Mustang Super Snake Shelby achieves the power upgrades with a different supercharger kit and a new exhaust system while other mods include a cold air intake system and a custom drive shaft on the 725HP variant
To improve handling, the Super Snake package adds a race-spec suspension system with adjustable dampers, a short throw shifter and a Baer brake system with 6 piston calipers and cross drilled and ventilated discs. Customers can also opt for a more hardcore Eibach handling pack.

For the interior, the basic Super Snake package adds center gauge cluster, satin door lock knobs and headrests embroidered with the Shelby logo which also appears on the center console.
Once you bring in your GT500, Shelby will charge you $29,495 for 630HP package and $33,495 for the 725HP kit. In both cases, prices including installation but not the donor car - just to make it clear.
